All construction contractors and companies who perform any type of construction work in Iowa are required to register with Iowa Workforce Development/Iowa Division of Labor and renew the registration annually. However, certain contractors/companies who earn less than $2,000 a year are exempt from these requirements.
The below contractor registration requirements are in addition to the Iowa Secretary of State’s general requirements for all in-state companies and out-of-state companies doing business in Iowa.
In addition, if a contractor provides any type of plumbing, mechanical, HVAC, refrigeration, sheet metal or hydronic systems services, the contractor is also required to obtain a license with the Plumbing & Mechanical Systems Board.

- Initial fee of $50, or other applicable fees
- Proof of workers’ compensation insurance
- Iowa Unemployment Insurance Account number

Additional Requirements for Registering an Out-of-State Contractor
In addition to the requirements above, all companies doing business Iowa, but that are not incorporated in Iowa, must also post a surety bond of $25,000 and renew it every year. The penalties for violating this law are severe and range from $500 to $5,000 per day of violation.
