A Maui Police Department spokesperson has confirmed that human remains were recovered Tuesday at the old Lahaina courthouse, which was destroyed in the Aug. 8 fire.
“At this time, it is unknown if the remains are primary (meaning new) or secondary (meaning additional from a prior recovery),” MPD spokesperson Alana Pico said via email Friday. “As with all recoveries, a determination will be made, however, it is pending autopsy and forensic examination to make the determination and further identification of the remains. Should this be verified as a primary recovery, a press release will follow accordingly.”
Pico did not say which agency found the remains and how they were discovered. Search and rescue operations finished around the end of August, and the EPA is currently removing hazardous materials from burn areas.
MPD has confirmed that 98 people died in the fire. Another seven remain unaccounted for.
